THE SHORT ANSWER
What does excavation and site preparation include?
Excavation and site preparation create the safe, buildable starting point for construction. The work can include clearing, access preparation, rough grading, foundation or utility excavation, trench coordination, backfill and compaction. Good Boy Builders plans that work around the approved project—not as an isolated dirt-moving step—so the site is ready for concrete, structure, utilities and inspections.
Property & access review
Evaluate equipment access, staging, existing improvements, slopes, drainage paths, utilities and the area available for safe operations.
Earthwork & drainage
Coordinate clearing, cuts, fills, rough grading and water movement with the plans, site conditions and downstream construction.
Construction handoff
Prepare the site for required verification and the next scheduled phase, including concrete, structural work, utilities or specialty construction.
CAPABILITIES
Site work planned around what comes next
The correct scope depends on the property, permitted plans, survey information, soils and engineering requirements, utility locations and jurisdiction. We define those inputs early so the earthwork supports the complete construction sequence.
- Site clearing and construction-access preparation
- Building-pad and foundation excavation
- Rough grading and drainage coordination
- Utility and service-trench coordination
- Backfill and compaction coordination
- Preparation for additions, casitas, garages and workshops
- Site work supporting structural and selected commercial projects
Final scope is established from the project documents and existing site conditions. Work requiring design or certification is coordinated with the appropriate licensed design professional or testing provider.
BUILT FOR SOUTHERN ARIZONA CONDITIONS
Three issues that should be resolved before equipment arrives
Soils, grades & compaction
Foundation performance begins with the conditions below it. Plans, soils information, required testing and finished elevations should guide excavation and fill placement.
Monsoon drainage
Existing flow paths, roof drainage, neighboring grades and planned improvements must be considered so earthwork does not create avoidable water problems.
Utilities & site access
Known and marked utilities, equipment clearances, haul routes, gates, overhead conflicts, stockpile areas and protected improvements affect the workable plan.
OUR PROCESS
From property review to a construction-ready site
Review the property
Start with the address, proposed use, dimensions, photographs, access and any survey, plans, soils information or engineering already available.
Define the requirements
Identify permitting, utility-location, design, testing, drainage and sequencing requirements before defining the field scope.
Prepare & excavate
Complete the agreed clearing, access, grading, trenching or excavation work with attention to neighboring improvements and the approved project.
Verify & hand off
Coordinate required inspections or testing and prepare the site for concrete, utilities, structure or the next scheduled trade.
CONNECTED CONSTRUCTION
Excavation is usually one part of a larger project
Keeping site work under the same construction plan helps align excavation, concrete, structure, utilities, inspections and the trades that follow.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
Excavation and site-preparation FAQs
Early answers help determine whether a project is ready for pricing—or needs additional site, design or permitting information first.
City of Tucson grading permits
Pima County grading requirements
Arizona 811 utility-location information
Do you provide excavation as a stand-alone service?
Good Boy Builders is generally best suited to excavation connected to a larger construction, foundation, structural, utility or site-development scope. Send the property and project details so we can determine fit.
Do I need plans or an engineer before requesting a review?
Not always. A property address, photographs, proposed use and approximate dimensions are enough to begin the conversation. Existing surveys, plans, soils information or engineering reports should be included when available.
Is a grading permit required in Tucson or Pima County?
Permit requirements depend on the jurisdiction, disturbed area, cuts and fills, slopes, drainage, floodplain conditions and the broader project. The City of Tucson and Pima County publish current grading guidance; the applicable authority should confirm the path for the specific property.
Can excavation be coordinated with a steel building or RV garage?
Yes. Site work can be planned with the building footprint, vehicle approach, foundation, slab, utilities, drainage and erection sequence instead of handing those pieces to unrelated teams.
How are underground utilities handled?
Known utilities, owner-provided records and required utility-location procedures are incorporated into preconstruction. Arizona 811 states that a locate request should be made at least two full working days before digging; private facilities may require separate locating.
What should I send for an initial project review?
Send the property location, proposed use, approximate dimensions, photographs, access information, desired timing, estimated budget and any survey, plans or reports already available.
