Construction was never something David discovered later in life. He grew up around it—learning from his father, grandfather, uncle, brother and cousins, and developing an appreciation for the trades long before construction became his profession.
Growing up in a construction family sometimes means learning the trades at a very young age. It was a different time when I was a kid. My dad was a top-notch painter who worked on housing complexes and federal jobs, and I wanted to go to work with him whenever I could.
I would help putty baseboards, run for tools and do whatever small jobs I could handle. Other times I was simply playing in the dirt still piled beside a new home. Either way, I loved being there. I wanted my dad to see that I could get things done, and I thought I was really helping long before I was old enough to make much of a difference.
My brother, my cousins and I were always curious about how things were built. We worked summers in construction while we were still in public school, and for us there was a competitive side to it—not much different from football or wrestling. We wanted to be the one who got the most done and, more importantly, the one who did the best job.
With my grandfather, uncle and cousins all owning construction companies, there was never a shortage of opportunities to learn. We wanted experience in as many trades as we could get. Sometimes the chance to learn a new skill was the reward by itself. The more each of us understood, the more useful we became to one another and the more we respected what it takes to put a building together correctly.
I really tried to show Dad that I could get things done. I thought I was helping long before I was old enough to make a difference.

My brother and I both graduated from Rincon High School and the University of Arizona. We started in Tucson and later expanded into Scottsdale, building on the same hands-on background we grew up with.
Arizona is home. As Good Boy Builders has grown, we have continued looking for ways to be useful to the communities we work in and to make a positive impact through the projects we take on.
That local history matters to me because construction is personal. Whether a client is repairing something that has gone wrong or creating something completely new, they are trusting us with a property that matters to them.
Growing up around working tradespeople shaped the way I look at construction. Knowing how individual pieces go together is important, but so are curiosity, accountability and respect for the people doing the work.
The family culture I grew up in rewarded learning another skill, understanding another trade and becoming more useful to the people around you.
As kids we competed to get more done, but doing the best job mattered just as much. That instinct to care about the result never really leaves you.
